The fear campaign to push the newly order boosters is on. WaPo and Eric Topol provide over the top fear-mongering

Opinion:The worst virus variant just arrived. The pandemic is not over.

The pandemic is a relentless race against Mother Nature.

[What does this actually mean?--Nass]

Waves of infection took millions of lives, and only highly effective vaccines prevented even more deaths. Now, the coronavirus is speeding up once again, mutating, evading immunity and still on the march. The arrival of subvariant BA.5 should be a reminder that the finish line in this race is nowhere to be seen.

[i.e., Get your booster!]

What’s BA.5? This is the latest subvariant of omicron, which stormed the planet late last year and caused a huge wave of infection. As of now, BA.5 and a closely related variant, BA.4, account for about 70 percent of all infections in the United States, according to estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based in part on modeling. These two newcomers are easing out an earlier variant, BA.2.

The obscure names should not hide the punch of BA.5. Eric Topol, professor of molecular medicine at Scripps Research, says that BA.5 “is the worst version of the virus that we’ve seen.” He adds, “It takes immune escape, already extensive, to the next level, and, as a function of that, enhanced transmissibility,” well beyond earlier versions of omicron. There has not been a marked increase in hospitalizations and deaths, he reports,

Actually deaths are way down and have been flat for the last 50 days, according to the CDC and NY Times.

because there is so much immunity built up from the winter omicron wave. But there are aspects of this new variant very much worth keeping an eye on as the United States remains stuck at an uncomfortably high plateau of pandemic misery. And the new variants are driving a case surge in Europe.

At the core of the BA.5 difference is its biology. Evolution has given it more fitness, a term that incorporates its ability to transmit, grow and evade immunity; the variant shows “marked difference from all prior variants,” reports Dr. Topol. One way it does so is by evading the body’s immune system, and BA.4 and BA.5 together are “the most immune-evasive variants” seen in multiple studies to date.

Whether BA.5 will lead to more severe disease isn’t clear yet. But knowing that the virus is spreading should reinforce the need for the familiar mitigation measures: high-quality face masks, better air filtration and ventilation, and avoiding exposure in crowded indoor spaces.

An important question is whether the next boosters should include the new variants. Does a booster with an earlier version of the virus make any sense if that variant has disappeared from the population? The Food and Drug Administration has recommended manufacturers build a bivalent or two-component vaccine, with old and new variants as the target. It certainly makes sense to be flexible — as Wayne Gretzky put it, to skate where the puck is going, not where it has been. But time is short, and who knows what variants will be present later this year? In the longer term, variant chasing is hardly ideal. The greatest need is for next-generation vaccines that are more broadly protective, more durable (with longer-lasting immunity) and that can dampen transmission. There is a major research effort underway to achieve this, but the finish line is not yet in sight.

  1. I crossed the finish line months ago. A virus mutation equates to less virulence.

Most embarrassing of all is the staggering number of young people wearing masks at the grocer. Little old ladies mask free and 20 something’s masked up.

  2. Dr. Nass - in case you missed it, Naomi Wolf was given the bum's rush from a restaurant here in Oregon last week, as it was requiring its customers to be injected:

This is my hometown. Salem isn't generally the libtard bastion of, say, Portland and Eugene. Yet the covidiotism is still running full force among certain segments of the populations here. It is so disheartening.

The interaction she recorded is a textbook example in the impossibility of engaging "true believers" in any sort of rational dialogue.

  4. A "vaccine" that doesn't even keep people from getting the virus. With a 99.98% percent recovery rate, there is no need for any of this.

By the way, why is it that that most of the people coming down with covid are the vaccinated?

If anyone is at stake, it would be those who possess extremely weak immune systems. Viruses do not gain more strength as they mutate. Mutation brings easier transmission, but less severity and danger.

This is just more scare tactics to make fearful more afraid.

I possess a photo of a little girl wearing a mask over her mouth and nose followed up by a statement- "Our enemies use documented behavior modification psychology, to make the public to do themselves, what our enemies could never do by force.

If people researched behavior modification psychology, they would realize that they're being mentally manipulated into destroying themselves and their own children...."

  5. 'FLASH'!

'Zach Bush on COVID-19, glyphosate, and the nature of viruses - Episode 39.'

    Courtesy of LiveHealthyBeWell

In this episode Jeffrey Smith speaks with Dr. Zach Bush, MD an internationally recognized educator and thought leader on the microbiome as it relates to health, disease and food systems.

Zach believes that COVID-19 has been demonized by the mechanisms at the CDC and WHO and that the ulterior motive of both of these organizations seems to be 'the production of a multi-billion dollar vaccine'. Many viruses of the past like MERS and SARS have disappeared naturally over the course of 12 months without the need for a vaccine.

Zach, as always, speaks truth to the public health system.

WHY HAS A LARGE CLASS ACTION LAW SUIT NOT BEEN BROUGHT AGAINST HIM FOR DOING SO AND HIS INCOMPETENT ADMIN?

  8. The problem with honkeypox is that it has racial connotations of course. It can be construed in different ways.

I think "donkeypox" removes the racial overtone and implies people who are being vaccinated at this late date are donkeys, when it should be clear these vaccines are all risk and no benefit-- doesn't this term provides a broader umbrella and easier narrative tone?

  9. The problem with the "donkey" in "donkeypox" is that folks might be inclined to equate it strictly with machinations having to do with the democratic party. All that does is to continue to paint the issue with a particular political hue -- just the kind of misdirection the fabricators and enablers of this op would like to see continued.

I'm sticking with "honkeypox" -- not just for Africans anymore.

That is far more relevant and realistic to what in fact is going on here.

  10. Is Topol a native English speaker? - that reads like it's from someone who isn't aware of the tone and diction appropriate to the subject and purpose of their writing.

What's stranger is that it reads a lot like the PRC sponsored news copy you'll find on English language websites devoted to East Asia news coverage - as though the writer's only reference for persuasive rhetoric is American car advertising.
